Iceland Seafood Recognizes the Environmental and Social Responsibility of Increasing Renewable Energy Use in Its Operations

Electricity consumption accounts for approximately 5% of our total greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. In 2022, our renewable energy intensity slightly decreased from 0.99% in 2021 to 0.9%. This change is due to variations in the electricity mix supplied by our utility providers in Ireland, Spain, and Argentina.

In 2022, the overall energy mix we utilized comprised 47% renewable sources and 11% nuclear power. Additionally, 28% came from natural gas. In total, 86% of our energy consumption derives from sources with zero or low emission factors—a positive indicator, yet one with room for improvement. We have therefore set an ambitious target to increase our share of renewable energy to 80% by 2026.

To support this goal, we have invested in solar panel installations at our sites in Madrid and Barcelona. Solar energy offers an abundant, clean, and sustainable source of heat and electricity. Its reliability, positive impact on air quality, and cost-effectiveness made investing in solar technology for our Spanish subsidiaries an easy decision.

Ahumados Domínguez in Madrid and Iceland Seafood Ibérica in Barcelona have completed the installation of solar panels and will soon begin generating electricity. These panels are installed on the roofs of our buildings, efficiently utilizing otherwise unused space. In Madrid, we expect to produce approximately 550 kWh, and in Barcelona around 440 kWh—together covering about 25% to 30% of the electricity needs for our Spanish subsidiaries.

Meanwhile, our operations in Ireland are in the planning stages for solar cell installation. The planned solar cells are projected to supply 18% of the electricity demand, saving approximately 29 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

We eagerly anticipate activating the new solar panels and assessing their positive impact on the Group’s overall environmental footprint.
